Humping the Bump: Sexual Activity

Pregnancy is very sexy. If you don’t believe me, check out Claudia Schiffer and Demi Moore posing on the covers of German Vogue and Vanity Fair, respectively. Or ask your partner. But up to half of mothers and a quarter of fathers worry that sexual activity will harm their baby, which is a bit of a libido killer.188

This one sits firmly in the category of myth. An exhaustive review of fifty-nine studies has concluded that as long as there are no obvious complications (like bleeding), sexual activity in pregnancy won’t do any harm whatsoever.189 And couples who maintain a healthy, enjoyable sex life during pregnancy are more likely to have a harmonious marriage both four months and three years after the birth (although, of course, this may be correlation rather than causation).

So if you’re in the mood, go for it. If you’re not feeling very glamorous, there’s an absurdly named brand of lingerie called Hotmilk designed specifically for pregnant women.190 If you’ve got it, flaunt it.
